Roots of Enlightenment
One of the most iconic images of Thailands Buddhist culture is the Buddha head covered in tree roots in Ayutthaya. Back in the mid-18th century Thailand, which was then known as ‘Siam’, was invaded for the second time by the Burmese army. The invaders razed cities and temples, and in doing so, destroyed and beheaded many Buddhas around Thailand.
No one knows exactly how this particular Buddha head got entwined with the tree roots, but the site was largely left abandoned until the 1950s, so it’s assumed that a tree just happened to grow around it.
Makes for a pretty neat image though, huh?
